Magda Petrov is a 78-year-old female who develops severe breathlessness at 4 pm. She was admitted to the respiratory ward 3 days ago with Infective Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).She was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease 5 years ago. Mrs. Petrov has had increasing shortness of breath, productive cough, and fever for the last 7 days. She has been commenced on oral antibiotics and prednisone. You do an A-G assessment and her clinical manifestations were:
- Severe dyspnoea at rest
- Respiratory rate of 32 breaths/minute
- Bluish tinge to lips and mucus membranes
- SpO2 86%, on room air
- Productive cough with yellow phlegm
- Pulse rate of 130 beats/minute
- Auscultation of lungs identifies diminished breath sounds
- Her X-ray showed
- Chest x-ray showed hyper-inflated lung fields with patchy consolidation.
