Introduction
Critically, this essay will analyse organisational culture theory and paradox theory as represented in four seminal articles. These theories will be applied to the case study of Careers Australia Education Institute (CAEI), where the Schein article (2004) will be used to explain the theoretical grounding of organisational culture. Extending upon
this foundation, an alternative perspective from Gibson and Birkenshaw (2004) will be explored; in an effort to go beyond the notion of a ‘strong culture’ as paramount to
organisational success or failure.
Similarly, the paradoxes that riddle Career Australia’s decline will be delineated by Poole and Van de Ven’s (1989) work and offset by an analysis of the recommendations made by Smith and Lewis’ (2011) pivotal work. Principally, these articles were chosen for their reputation in sociological, organisational and management studies, (as evidence by the thousands of repeated citations). However, they were also selected for their applicability to the downfall of CAEI. Despite praising such works, this essay will be balanced by an evaluation of each theory’s limitations and conclude with a reflection upon the ironic paradox inherent to the study of both theories.

Established in 2006, CAEI was a privately operated and shareholder-funded vocational education and training business. CAEI was practicing in the same training and vocational sector as the public-owned TAFE; delivering programs such as certificates (I-IV) and diplomas. Prior to declaring voluntary administration on 25th May 2017, (Australian Government 2017), CAEI had 1559 employees and over 15,000 active students. At the time, CAEI was one of Australia’s largest education providers (Bloomberg 2018).

This was the same year the Gillard government expanded the VET/FEE HELP program without sufficient safeguards (Tomazin 2017; Atkin 2017). Following the introduction of the new loans scheme, staff at CAEI began to engage in unscrupulous and on occasion, unconscionable conduct in an effort to sign up large volumes of students.
